Find out how to get involved right now…

2011’S TOP PHOTO COMPETITION has begun! Brought to you by Britain’s biggest photography mags, Digital Photo and Practical Photography, Photographer of the Year 2011 gives you the chance to put your talents to the test with six creatively challenging rounds.

I entered the ‘Still Life’ round of the Photographer of the year and whilst I did not win (was a runner up, one of 10 shortlisted out of circa 1500 entrants) I won £150 Jessops voucher and had the work published in the UK‘s leading photography magazine.

Here is the image, it was shot in a psychiatric hospital using a Nikon D300 with a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. This very typewriter was in a ward that housed psychiatric patients, it was used as a learning/communication tool which is why this image is so special. Our eyes will see a typewriter in front of a window but just imagine who else shared the same view? The reality of its emotional history moves us away from a photo into a deeper and more surreal experience.

This photo was post-processed in Photoshop using a selection of adjustment layers, curves, composite gaussian blurs and highlight/shadow adjustments.

There is an editorial video review of the image, here

Hope you enjoy the image

  1. It’s an awesome image, and looking at some of the other shots that we’re in the video you linked the standard appears to be very high, so well done on getting so far, and so close.
