Chernobyl/Pripyat City - Nuclear Reactors / Radiation Testing

Nuclear Reactors / Radiation Testing (Chernobyl, Ukraine)

This set of images include the Chernobyl nuclear reactors and various radiation testing that we monitored across Pripyat and Chernobyl. Radiation has a relationship between actual exposure level and exposure time. Typically, normal background radiation is around 3 millisieverts per year. At some points around reactor #4, we were reading 3.94 millisieverts per hour. For each hour that went by, we would be exposed to 1 years worth of radiation – we took some quick photos and moved on.

Little is known about the history behind Maison Heinen, its beautiful flowing staircase, its paintings or its rural settings. The detail behind each hand painted room is beautiful, a credit to its former owners who were millers or farmers.

The Antwerp Premetro was to be a length of 15 km with 22 stations and was to be a network consisting of lines 2, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 15 of the Antwerp Tram system. It was a 1000 mm rail gauge system, which planned to run underground in the city centre and further out on surface lines, which were separate from motor traffic. It was intended eventually to evolve into a full metro, similar to the Brussels Metro or German Stadtbahnen (light railways).

Château de Noisy (Belgium)

Château de Noisy was to be built with many towers, conical roofs, and other Neo-Gothic details, with approximately 500 windows. Milner did not get to finish the castle as he died before the building was completed. The building was continued by the French architect Pelchner, extending the Château largely. The clocktower was finished in 1903 and is 183 feet tall, and 1907 saw the completion of building activity. Initially Chateau Miranda, boasting beautifully landscaped gardens, served the family Liedekerke de Beaufort as a summer residence.

Inside Pripyat Schools and Kindergartens. This set explores inside the Chernobyl incident zone of alienation, specifically looking inside the abandoned schools and kindergartens 27 years later… The schools and kindergartens are pretty emotional places, with artefacts left such as children’s registers, toys, books and finger paintings. I hope you enjoy looking at this set, it brings home a very real view of how Chernobyl / Pripyat has been left.

RAF West Raynham is a historically interesting air force base. The station closed in 1994, though the Ministry of Defence (MoD) retained it as a strategic reserve. Having laid derelict since closure, the MoD elected in 2004 that it was surplus to requirements, and the site was sold in 2006.

This site remains a beautiful reminder of the UK’s air defence network.

We arrived at Beelitz Heilstatten around 5am after a long drive through the night from Holland. The size of this place is amazing, its the size of a small village with the most beautiful architecture. Its rumoured that Hitler was treated in this very hospital when he was shot in the Battle of the Somme. Beelitz has been vandalised and ruined however you will still find lots of beautiful architecture to shoot.
